Red that was a S P E C T A C U L A R post about not taking pit bulls to The Dog Park. I already read most of the linked articles at one time or another and I think giving out all the links together in this sticky is going to be really handy  It's almost hard to believe that something as simple to use as a leash could prevent so much heartache :huh?: I hope other people will "get it".

Truly outstanding post. A must read for all bully owners (and especially for want-to-be owners). If you want a dog-park dog, do NOT get a pitbull. One question (especially for you rescue people) why are some (actually probably about half if you browse petfinder) pitbulls identified as "dog friendly"? I realize that some pitties are truly dog-friendly , but that is also a trait that could change at any time. However, a "dog-friendly" label may give adopters a false sense of security (espcially bully-naive owners) and doesn't really set them up for reality (i.e. no daycare, no dog park, no leaving dogs out unattended). I realize that there are a lot of wonderful pitties that need homes and that "full disclosure" may scare off some would-be super owners (to be honest DH and I might have been scared off ourselves), but still...is it to ever identify a pittie as "dog friendly"? I do not have an answer for this myself, I was just curious about what people think.

Thank you for posting this!! A very informative article but interesting at the same time! :headbang:
I have a 12 week old APBT pup and we got to the dog park and he stays on a leash. We keep our sessions short and sweet. He is still a puppy and I bring him on Sundays after puppy class. He enjoys being able to visit and play. I know now is really the only acceptable time to bring him to the park, when he is still young and doesn't have any dog issues. We've gone 3 times now and have ever only seen one pit bull. The owner I believe was careless because they allowed their dog to run around without a leash or collar. I asked if they were worried at all and they said "Oh no, she not aggressive at all." I just smiled, thinking to myself, yeah, not until that puffy shizu decides to bite her ankle. :bully:
This may be a stupid question but is it ever safe to bring my APBT to the dog park when he's older if he's on a leash at all times? Or is it torture for him to see the other dogs running loose?
Advice please. :)

Its not that bad to take them ON-LEASH. You still have control and if anything happens you are right there to stop things. You could even get a long lead, like a 20 foot rope that you can tie and make a longer leash out of, that way they are still able to run around and have fun, but you still have control.

Last time we went to the dog park that's what I did, I bought a 20 foot lead and tied it around my waste and it worked really really well. A few hundred "Excuse me's" and "Watch your leg" but other than that it was perfect!
Thank you lots!

Nice post, Red.

I just checked my BR email and received a letter called "Bad Owner Intervention" from a woman who's concerned about another woman in her town who apparently insists on bringing her new, untrained pit bull to the dog park to "prove" that the breed is good. I guess this gal had trouble with her old dog or some such, and is now out on a mission to shove her new dog into a variety of offleash dog/dog situations.

Maybe I'll send your post to this concerned citizens so that she can print out the relevant information and hand it to this person.

It's such a shame when pit bull owners are of the naiive opinion that *their dog is different, and/or that pit bull dog aggression is something shameful that needs to be overcome and "proven wrong" for the good of the breed. Sigh.

A larger discussion of dog aggression in all breeds (I mean, hello, they're dogs - a dog of any breed can demonstrate dog aggression) and the various reasons that dog parks are amateur hour really needs to open up in the dog owner's public discourse.

In the meantime, it sounds like this owner is well on her way to setting her second dog up to fail.

Let's hope it doesn't make the papers.
