I just love agility

Postby Leslie H » Mon Aug 02, 2010 6:12 pm

I can't imagine why I waited until I was nearly 50 to start. But, I'm really enjoying myself, and Soleil is really having fun. It's not a sport I'm particularly suited for, I'm clumsy, slow, and do not think quickly on my feet. I have trouble translating verbal or visual info into physical movements. Throw in a clingy but fast dog, and you'd think we are a recipe for disaster. We certainly have a few, w/in the past couple weeks I've smashed my dog into a wing jump (by the second go she bounced off it w/all 4 feet, as her learning curve is better than mine) and run her off a dog walk. But sometimes everything just clicks, and we're in sync, and it's just so satisfying.

Me too!

It really is a good sport for us middle aged handlers, in terms of our health if not in success; it gives us a mental workout which is really healthy for brain function as well as getting the physical activity. A lot of good agility handlers actually start out as being not particularly suited for the sport, but the challenges of it are inspiring.

Soleil appears to be quite talented, so you've got a good dog to start with!

I love it too! I wish it weren't so difficult and expensive to find good trainers around here - I'm mediocre at best, but Oscar could be really spectacular. Sarah keep refusing my offer to come live in Liberty's old room and train me. Selfish woman.

Me too :))
This year I've been training with a new trainer who is just brilliant, and I am so inspired.Mookie got another place on Sat,6th from around 180 dogs.
Shady is a super fast jumps, but is not a natural jumper unfortunatly,so we often suffer from 'one jump itis'!

I call those moments the crack that keeps us paying the entry fees, lol.

Martin's knees can't take agility (and Mysti would eat anything fluffy) but someday (hopefully a LONG time from now) I will have a dog suited for it, I hope :) (and yes, it WILL be aa APBT :) )
It looks like so much fun!

One thing (among the many) I really enjoy is watching the handlers w/senior dogs. You can see the bond between them, how the dog still enjoys running, although they are less able. This past weekend, there were 2 handlers in power chairs. Very inspiring.

I remember Lora (Hartagold) writing about COBRA's, crazy old broads running agility. It always cracks me up.
