Neophobia in Dogs

Postby Mya&theSiebenDackels » Thu Jan 13, 2011 10:59 pm

Neophobia is the fear of new things or experiences.

I was reading Aggression in Dogs by Brenda Aloff and it was mentioning different types of aggression. Neophobia was one of them and describes Tankers very well. Tank(who lives with my Grandparents right now) is a 3 year old Great Pyrenees/Lab mix and he HATES change. One time I changed around the furniture in my room and it took him three days to feel okay with coming in my room without cowering, panting and whining. He also has fear aggression with people and does not like to be hugged, you to lay your head on him or restrained. He likes everything in his life to stay the same and new things(that includes people) and experience make him very nervous. When he lived with me, I tried to make sure I kept his life as simply as possible and also worked with him on his issues. He had gotten a lot better before he had to live with my Grandparents which I am sure stressed him out. I will be so glad to get him back but I know when I do, I will have A LOT of work to do!

So my question is, do any of your dogs have Neophobia?
