Lets hope the citizens of Miami-Dade don't let us down and vote in the right representatives. This could open up a realm of possibilities here in south Florida when it comes to the pit bull community. We could stop wasting tax dollars on a ban that isn't working and use those tax dollars to update the shelter. That place is ridiculously outdated and the director...Well, that's another issue.

Help repeal BSL in Miami-Dade County, Florida

Dahlia Canes, the Founder/Director for the MCABSL, is urging Florida residents to please take action now and write, call, e mail or fax the Agriculture & Natural Resources Subcommittee and contact their respective legislators, to pass SB1322 and HB997. This is an incredible opportunity to repeal BSL in Miami~Dade County .

Florida state law prohibits muncipalities from passing BSL, but allows breed specific ordinances that were in place prior to October 1, 1990. The most famous of these grandfathered laws is the breed ban in Miami-Dade County.

Newly filed Florida House Bill 997, along with its companion Senate Bill 1322, are very simple bills that remove the grandfather clause. If these bills pass, Miami-Dade County (and any other municipality with grandfathered BSL) will be forced to repeal.

HB 997 has just been assigned to the Agriculture & Natural Resources Subcommittee. No hearing has been scheduled yet. Please contact the following members and urge them to pass HB 997. (Email block for cut-and-paste.)

Steve.Crisafulli@myfloridahouse.gov; Rachel.Burgin@myfloridahouse.gov; Michelle.Rehwinkel@myfloridahouse.gov; jim.boyd@myfloridahouse.gov; jason.brodeur@myfloridahouse.gov; dwight.bullard@myfloridahouse.gov; matt.caldwell@myfloridahouse.gov; luis.garcia@myfloridahouse.gov; richard.glorioso@myfloridahouse.gov; tom.goodson@myfloridahouse.gov; steve.perman@myfloridahouse.gov; ray.pilon@myfloridahouse.gov; elizabeth.porter@myfloridahouse.gov; franklin.sands@myfloridahouse.gov; jimmie.smith@myfloridahouse.gov

You can also contact your respective Florida legislators and ask them to support this bill.

Please also write to the bill sponsors and thank them for filing this important bill:
HB 997 filed by Rep Carlos Trujillo, carlos.trujillo@myfloridahouse.gov
SB 1322 filed by Senator Jim Norman, norman.jim.web@flsenate.gov

Status page for HB 997: http://www.myfloridahouse.gov/Sections/ ... llId=48233

Read the text of the proposed bill: http://www.myfloridahouse.gov/Sections/ ... ssion=2012

Thank you to Dahlia for the information and for all the hard work she and so many others are doing to repeal all existing BSL in Florida!

Mark Buehrle balks at Miami’s ban on pit bulls

January 10, 2012 7:50PM

Former White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle ’s love of dogs almost prevented him from signing with the Miami Marlins, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

The paper said the Miami-Dade County ban on pit bulls had Buehrle, who owns an adopted pit bull along with three Vizlas, think twice about signing “if it came down to not finding a house [where all his canines could live].’’

Buehrle, his wife, two children and pets found a home in neighboring Broward County. Buehrle and his wife,

Jamie , were active in pet adoption with the Sox and became spokespeople for Best Friends Animal Society in Utah, which took in and rehabilitated 22 of the pit bulls confiscated in the Michael Vick dogfighting case.

“It’s kind of ridiculous that because of the way a dog looks, people will ban it,’’ Buehrle told the paper. “Every kind of dog has good and bad, and that depends on the handlers. If you leave a dog outside all the time, it’ll be crazy. Slater [his dog] would never do anything harmful.’’

:goodpost: I too am a member of MCABSL and have faith that we soon will be able to proudly walk down our streets with our babies in broad day light. There are many wonderful people in our coalition who are going above and beyond to make things happen and we have NEVER been so close to victory for our babies. Dahlia is an amazing woman with a heart of gold and she is working hard on behalf of all Pitties everywhere!! We have even made international news! There was an article written about MCABSL featuring Dahlia Cane, which states that the bad is expected to be repealed. I cannot express how emotional this is for all of us Pit Bull parents in Miami Dade. This weekend 2/12/12 there will be another peaceful demonstration here is the information:

There is a lot of talk of finally after 20 years to lift the bann on Breed Specific Legislation! But this isn't enough! Miami-Dade as much as we yelled and screamed and showed support for our beloved Miami Heat when they were White HOTT! We need to Yell and Scream for this Prejudice/Discrimnative/Racist ignorant law to be lifted. If any of you who are animal lovers, own a pit, or just simply know right from wrong. Please we encourage you to support make enough noise to shake this ban to be lifted.

TO SUPPORT HB997 and SB1322!!!

We need Miami to come together on this.
Please visit: www.unitedagainstbsl.org
www.MCABSL.com

If you know anyone in Media, any artist, radio stations, athletes.
We need support of all angles and all networks please help be the voice for them.

If pitts could yell for themselves they would for their rights!
But since they can't we need to do it for them.

Please! I can't plead enough how critical time this is right now!
WE NEED YOU! THEY NEED YOU! LETS COME TOGETHER TO MAKE A COMMUNITY CHANGE!!!!!!!!

Thank you in Advance!

Wear your MCABSL shirts and bring signs
-NO BSL
-Support HB997 and SB1322
-Save County $3,000,000 tax dollars

Posted this on my post in general and realized it was in the wrong place so i'm re-posting here under Laws:

So both bills HB997 and SB1332 passed the committee's yesterday. If any of these two bills pass the BSL in Miami Dade county will be repealed. We have one more committee in Tallahassee and then it goes to the Floor for vote. When SB1322 was being heard yesterday it was a moving experience. Senator Flores stated that the commends Pit Bull owners in Miami Dade County because never in all her years has she received the amount of emails and calls in favor for a bill as she did for this bill. She further stated that she received between 700-800 emails ALL in favor of the Bill which will remove BSL from Miami.

Our voices have been heard, and the fact that at least one Commissioner acknowledged all our efforts is proof that we have strength in numbers. United we stand. <3 I am so happy. :nana: :nana:

Miami Marlins pitcher Mark Buehrle, wife make case for animal rights

Buehrle family owns a pit bull, opposes breed discrimination

JUPITER –

Tuesday was a tough day for the Buehrle family.
Especially Jamie Buehrle, animal rights advocate and wife of the new Marlins pitcher.
"She's 200 percent into this," said Mark Buehrle, the All-Star left-hander. "I help out when I can, but she's constantly trying to save dogs, trying to get dogs out of shelters where they're going to be put down."
That's why it was so disappointing for the Buehrles to see House Bill 997, for which they recently taped two public-service announcements, get bogged down in a budgetary subcommittee.
The measure, which would effectively repeal a Miami-Dade County restriction on pit bulls, fell one vote short of making it to the House floor. With the Florida Legislature set to break on March 9, the bill isn't dead yet, but it's going to need a late-inning rally.
"Jamie and I have been texting all day," said Ledy VanKavage, senior legislative attorney for Best Friends Animal Society. "She wants to know what the strategy is now."
Plenty of athletes have charitable "causes," but few sports families invest so much of themselves as the Buehrles have in animal rights.
While Mark was starring for the White Sox, their donations helped expand the reach of an Illinoisorganization called Hope Animal Rescue.
The Buehrles have made a pair of visits to southern Utah, home of Best Friends' 3,800-acre ranch. That's where 1,700 animals receive care at the nation's largest sanctuary for the abused and abandoned.
"They're the cream of the crop, man," VanKavage said. "They're good folks. They speak out for the dogs. It's so amazing to see them take this to heart."
When Mark signed his four-year, $58 million contract with the Marlins this winter, Best Friends representative John Polis contacted the Buehrles and asked for their help. Turned out Miami-Dade was the only Florida county that still allowed discrimination against certain dog breeds.
That meant the Buehrles wouldn't be living there, not with their pit bull Slater meaning so much to their young family.
They only adopted him last April, shortly after the baseball season began. Jamie had found Slater at an Illinois shelter and placed him with a family, but the other dog at that home didn't mesh with Slater, so the Buehrles took him in.
"You couldn't ask for a better dog," Mark said. "I try to tell people, 'If you're scared of pit bulls or don't like them just because of the way they look, let me introduce you to my dog.' We treat him right."
Slater has been to enough training classes to be certified as a Good Citizen Dog. He was certified through the Continental Kennel Club, and the next step is to get him trained as a therapy dog.

That way the Buehrles could take Slater along on visits to nursing homes and hospitals.
I'll admit, the very term "pit bull" gives me pause. So many stories have given that breed a bad reputation, one that's not in line with actual dog-bite statistics, Polis said.
Slater, for instance, sounds like a softie. The Buehrle kids – Braden, 4, and Brooklyn, who turns 3 on Saturday – play with him all the time.
"My kids go up to him and hug him and squeeze him," Mark said. "He's an inside dog. People always go on the look of the dog, but it's not the look. It's how the dog is treated."
That's why the Buehrles feel so strongly about HB997. Mark has already made his share of phone calls to state elected officials, thanking supporters and lobbying some of the holdouts.
He said he's willing to make a personal appearance in Tallahassee if it makes pit bulls welcome throughout Miami-Dade County, home of his new workplace.
"A lot of folks don't want to get involved; they shy away from political fights," VanKavage said. "Mark and Jamie have been great. When they see something that's unfair, they say it."
