thinking of building a treadmill

Postby u-turn » Sat Mar 22, 2008 8:05 am

I have been thinking about building a treadmill.

i know i can build the frame work but i need info on belts and rollers.

how they attach look, where to buy a carpet style belt ect.

if anyone have plans or pics , i would love to see them. I really need to see bottom of treadmill.

since U-turn has a while to go before he can use, i can began my build and take my time to do it right. (plus spead the cost over time) lol

You have to build a running surface out of plywood (that is your base) covered with 1/8" High Density Polyethylene Plastic (that is the actual part that touches the belt). This type of plastic is extremely strong and also very smooth which in turn makes for a smoother operation of the mill.
There are two rollers of equal size (1 in the front and 1 in the back) which are made (in my case) out of 2" PVC pipe over a steel pipe covered with 2" foam insulation. Each roller is attached to a heavy duty bearing on both sides which are held in place by a bearing block that was drilled out with a forstner bit to match the diameter of the bearing.

About how much do you think this would cost total?

I'm looking into this like this for Sadie and need to take prices into consideration.

It's either build her one, or try to get a real treadmill in the house somehow. lol. Plus, I want an agility course in the backyard for her. And a bunch of other things.. haha. This dog has no idea whats in store for her.

I'm in the process of building one... although it's taking me forever :)

All of the parts cost me about $135, I had to special order bearings online cause I couldn't find any here...

I bought the blueprints on ebay :) They came with 40 pagse of really basic step by step instructions.

This one has gone more expensive... I think it was $34.95 when I got it.

In the directions to build mine, it's just a loop of carpet... you can buy a remnant at a carpet store of industrial carpet the width of the belt for about $10
